Idina Menzel and her son Walker are having some family time on the red carpet!
On Saturday, Nov. 9, the actress, 53, attended the Wicked premiere in Los Angeles with a very special guest — her 15 year old son.
The duo were all smiles at the event, even wearing matching black outfits with dashes of white — Menzel in an all-black one-sleeved gown with fabric gathered at the shoulder that she teamed with a black-and-white purse, while Walker sported a black suit, black shirt and black-and-white sneakers.
The highly anticipated movie, directed by Jon M. Chu, stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo as Glinda and Elphaba, respectively. Menzel played Elphaba in the original Broadway production of Wicked, alongside Glinda’s original actress Kirsten Chenoweth, and as well as taking photographs with her son, Menzel, spent some time posing with Chenowith, Grande and Erivo on the red carpet at the L.A. premiere.
The Frozen actress shares Walker with her ex husband, Taye Diggs. Menzel and Diggs met during the Broadway production of Rent in 1996, married in 2003 and divorced in 2013. The former couple remain on good terms and maintain a great co-parenting relationship.
In June, ahead of Walker’s 15th birthday in September, Menzel shared some relatable moments about life with a teenage son an episode of PEOPLE in 10.
“He’s great. He’s a teenager, but he still hugs me once in a while so I’ll take that,” she teased at the time.
“What surprises me is just how mercurial it is, one minute they want nothing to do with you, and the next minute they really show you how much they need you,” she she added. “You really have to be on your toes and be willing to get out of their way and out of your own way and not take things too personally. Know that they feel your love but they also need their space.”
Menzel also opened up to PEOPLE in 2021 about the transformative experience of parenthood.
“It was actually really liberating when I became a mom, because everything was so focused on the self,” she said in August 2021. “And when you had these beautiful, little humans that you have to worry about, it teaches you priorities and perspective.”
The actress shared a sweet moment with her son in a 2021 interview with Glamour. As she turned 50 in 2021, Menzel felt self-conscious about the milestone, especially how it impacted her identity as a performer and actress.
Walker, who was 12 at the time, offered some affirmation.
“He says, ‘Mom, don’t look in the mirror and worry about how you look. You’re beautiful,'” Menzel told the outlet.
Her relationship with her son inspired her to practice self love, she said in the interview, “to walk the walk and talk the talk” and set a positive example for her son.
Meanwhile, the cute mother-son red capret appearance by Menzel and Walker wasn’t the only family-related event of the night, with Chu having missed the premiere to be with his wife as the couple welcomed their fifth child. He later shared a video of the 𝚋𝚊𝚋𝚢 girl on Instagram in celebration of her arrival.
