Expendables 4 sets unwanted record as it ends US box office run

The Expendables 4 has had a tough time in cinemas and that disappointing run has been capped off by yet another unwanted record as the movie’s US box office run came to an end.

The movie has now become the lowest-grossing entry in the entire franchise at both the US box office and the global box office. According to The Numbers, The Expendables 4, styled Expend4bles, has made $16.7 million at the US box office and $50.6 million globally.

This puts it far behind the previous lowest-grossing The Expendables movie, The Expendables 3, which accrued $39.3 million at the US box office and $209.4 million worldwide. The Expendables earned $103 million domestically and $268.2million globally.

The highest-grossing entry in the franchise is the second movie, which landed $85 million domestically and $311.9m worldwide. The Expendables 4 will be released in Japan in January 2024 but that is likely to make little to no difference, cementing the fourth film’s place as the lowest-grossing entry in the franchise.

This caps off a terrible run for the sequel after it previously became the lowest-rated movie in the franchise on Rotten Tomatoes. At the time of writing, the film is on a miserable 14%.

Plus, The Expendables 4 grossed only $8.3 million in its opening weekend. That is the lowest opening weekend figure in the franchise’s history after the original The Expendables movie garnered $34.8 million on its debut, The Expendables 2 raked in $28.5 million, and The Expendables 3 landed $15.8 million.

That opening weekend number continued the drop in debut for each The Expendables picture, signalling an ever-increasing disinterest in the franchise from audiences.

The film has also received poor critical reaction. Digital Spy’s own review summarised that the film “takes too long to enjoy itself.” Other critics also didn’t enjoy the picture.
