Prince Harry joins Anthony Joshua and Nicola Adams in the boxing ring to launch Made by Sport to raise £40m for disadvantaged young people

The Duke of Sus𝓈ℯ𝓍 looked smart as he joined boxing duo Anthony Joshua and Nicola Adams at the Black Prince’s Trust in Lambeth, South London today.

Prince Harry, 34, opted for a grey blazer, crisp white shirt and black trousers as he arrived without his wife Meghan, 37, who was still on maternity leave looking after 𝚋𝚊𝚋𝚢 Archie.

The Duke launched a new campaign called Made by Sport, which is a four-year campaign set up to champion the role sport can play in changing lives, as well as raising vital funds, £40 million in total, making it the largest ever grassroots fundraising campaign – for community groups, particularly in disadvantaged areas of the country.

It will link more than 60 different sporting organisations in the hope of reaching into thousands of schools and clubs across the country. Statistics show that young people from poorer backgrounds are 50 per cent less likely to play regular sport.

On his arrival at the event, which is being staged at the Community Sports Hub, the Duke met with young people taking part in boxing training sessions.

He greeted heavyweight Joshua warmly, with the pair, who have met before, hugging and laughing, before the prince asked: ‘When was the last time I saw you?’

They then chatted privately for a while before catching up with a group of schoolchildren who had been sparring using gloves and pads.

When the group seemed a little shy, Joshua, who had been coaching them earlier, urged them: ‘Tell them what you told me!’

‘A lot of kids your age have had anger and emotions they don’t know what to do with, that’s not unique,’ Harry said.

‘They are looking for a way to channel it and this where they should be doing it. You make friends, you find family, you are just part of a different gang.’

Joshua added: ‘Just remember, everyone has a purpose in life. All you need is a t-shirt, a tracksuit and a pair of gloves.’

On arrival the heavyweight boxer opted for a grey t-shirt, black jeans and white trainers, before quickly changing into his gym wear. With a smile from ear to ear, he could be seen giving a thumbs up to the photographers.

In the ring, Harry chatted with Nicola Adams OBE, the first woman to win an Olympic boxing title in 2012, who was also Olympic gold flyweight medalist in 2016.

‘I am really proud to be part of this initiative,’ she said afterwards. ‘I think every child deserves to have the chance to participate in sport.’

‘I was quite shocked to hear the statistics that not even half of children in schools get the chance to do sport. This project will give children the chance to get involved in sport if their patents don’t have the funds to help them. ‘

Among the children joined by Harry and Nicola in the ring were Oasis Academy schoolgirls Naomi Tsehaie, 11, Abigael Dosso, 12, and Khadija Wurie, 12.

‘We are all here because we love sport and how it makes us feel,’ said Naomi. ‘Nicola showed me a few tricks, like how to spin my hand around and punch. We had been really nervous about meeting Prince Harry but he was great and talking to us about how good sports makes us feel.’

The Duke of Sus𝓈ℯ𝓍 also heard from grassroots coaches about how they think the campaign will make a difference to young people’s lives and give a short speech before leaving.

It’s been a busy few days for the proud new father, who arrived on his own for a concert hosted by his charity Sentebale in Hampton Court Palace last night.

There, he was greeted by celebrities including Katherine Jenkins, Gemma Arterton and Emilia Fox.

The Duke welcomed singer Rita Ora with a hug when they were introduced at King Henry VIII’s famous home where entertainers from across the Commonwealth performed in the open-air.

Ora said after their meeting: ‘I’m so excited, a little bit of rain never really hurts anybody, I’m just happy to be here and to be able to support and try and raise as much awareness and money for such a great cause.’
