A noteworthy element regarding Ambrosius, the aquatic girlfriend of Chace Crawford’s character The Deep, has been revealed by the VFX Supervisor of “The Boys.”

“I love the detail of the toy in the tank”: Chace Crawford was so good as The Deep in Season 4, that every ‘The Boys’ fan missed a brilliant Ambrosius detail, making the show a true masterpiece. The VFX Supervisor for ‘The Boys’ has revealed an intriguing tidbit about Ambrosius, Chace Crawford’s character The Deep’s aquatic girlfriend.

The Boys has its fair share of messed up characters. And while Homelander might overshadow them all, there are others who are just as twisted, including Chace Crawford’s The Deep. Whether it is his obsession with worshipping the ground Homelander walks on or his relationship with sea creatures, The Deep has proven time and again that he’s actually pretty easy to despise. Clearly, Chace Crawford did an incredible job bringing the evil Aquaman clone to life.

The Deep’s romantic relationship with a female octopus, Ambrosius, is a prominent part of the story in season four of The Boys. While viewers might have been too busy trying to comprehend the relationship between the two, they probably missed out on a small but brilliant detail in Ambrosius’ tank.

The Deep may have loved Ambrosius, but he kept her stashed away in a little tank in his closet. The poor octopus would wait for hours for her beloved to return from his chores before begging him to put her in the massive tank in his room. All of this would be in vain, as Chace Crawford’s The Deep would just gaslight her.

He doesn’t clean her tank, doesn’t take her on vacation, keeps her hidden from the public view, and so on. Overall, this is hardly what a female wants from her guy, is it? To make matters worse, The Deep cheats on Ambrosius with Susan Heyward’s sister Sage. When Ambrosius discovers this and confronts him, he bursts her tank open, and she dies of asphyxiation, bringing their passion to an end.

Speaking to IndieWire about how they created Ambrosius, VFX supervisor Stephan Fleet stated that a ton of research went into it as they didn’t want her to be too human-like in terms of looks and movements. He said, “We had the look and the photo reality stuff down” but the real challenge came while working on the character’s movements. They didn’t want it to turn cartoonish.

He then went on to add that if viewers looked closely, they would see a small toy figurine of The Deep in the tank which Ambrosius would constantly interact with.

In Fleet’s words,

“If you look very closely, she’ll constantly be, like, wrapping her tentacle around the toy. And if she’s angry at him, she’ll move away from it. I love the detail of the toy in the tank because it gives the octopus character. It gives it something more than just being a static kind of creature in a small aquarium.”

It’s little details like these that have made The Boys one of the best television series to have come from the industry. Needless to say, the VFX team of the show deserves all the awards it can get!

Voiced by Tilda Swinton, Ambrosius’ life comes to an end when she smells The Deep’s hookup on him. She begs him to choose her over Sister Sage by complimenting his “gentle heart” and “fearless writing” but instead of melting at her words, The Deep ends up being angered and breaks the tank open, leaving her to die alone in the closet.

Talking to TVLine about the sudden twist in their relationship, Crawford stated that he was shocked to learn about the end of their romance. However, his initial shock aside, the actor found it pretty cool how the consequences of The Deep’s actions were starting to affect him.

He stated,

“I was shocked. I thought it was kind of cool, to be honest. His violence and his anger is spilling out into the real world and has real consequences for him. He’s sort of breaking down and losing it that he actually did this thing.”

He added,

“Hilarity ensues when she’s still alive and is kind of crying out. It’s so ridiculous, but it’s a real moment for him and I thought it was good to stretch the character that way.”

When asked what was worse, eating his Octopus friend Timothy or 𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁ing Ambrosius, Crawford replied,

“I mean, The Deep letting Ambrosius die, because that’s his happiness. What he should do is just run off together [with Ambrosius] and go in the ocean.”

It looks like The Deep just missed out on his one shot at true love. It’ll be years before we see how Ambrosius’ death affects The Deep and if he is able to move on from her at all. The wait will be worth it!
