Before meeting now-husband Nick Jonas, Priyanka Chopra froze her eggs in her 30s due to having “anxiety” over her biological clock.
“I also hadn’t met the person I wanted to have children with,” the actress shared on Monday’s episode of the “Armchair Expert” podcast.
The “Quantico” alum added that she ended up freezing her eggs after her mom, an OB-GYN, told her to “just do it.” At the time, she was feeling anxiety and pressure about wanting kids but being 35 years old.
Chopra admitted that when she met Jonas she was hesitant to date him due to their 10-year age gap.
She also wasn’t sure if he was in a place where he was thinking about starting a family.
“I always knew I wanted kids, which was one of the big reasons I didn’t want to date Nick at that time,” she explained.
“I was like, ‘I don’t know if he wants kids at 25,’ at that time. But I’ve always wanted kids. I love kids.”
Chopra clarified that she wasn’t just thinking about her love life when she made the decision to freeze her eggs — she also took her career into consideration.
“I felt such a freedom. I did it in my early 30s. I could continue on an ambitious warpath that I wanted to achieve,” Chopra said. “I wanted to get to a certain place in my career.”
While Chopra acknowledged how expensive the procedure can be, she urged those who want to have children one day to save up for it, adding that she tells “everyone” to freeze their eggs.
“I tell all my younger friends the biological clock is real,” Chopra said. “It gets so much harder to get pregnant after 35 and to carry to term and all of that, especially with women that have been working all their lives.”
However, the “White Tiger” star assured listeners that doctors have come a long way in recent years, with more fertility options now available.
“Science is at such an amazing place right now,” Chopra said. “It’s the best gift you’ll give yourself because you’re taking the power from your biological clock, and you can work until however long you want.
She added, “Your eggs will still be the same age as when you froze them for people who want kids.”
Chopra and the “Sucker” singer got married in 2018 and welcomed their first child, a 𝚋𝚊𝚋𝚢 girl named Malti Marie, via surrogate in January 2022.
“We are overjoyed to confirm that we have welcomed a 𝚋𝚊𝚋𝚢 via surrogate,” the duo wrote in a joint Instagram statement at the time. “We respectfully ask for privacy during this special time as we focus on our family.”
The new parents went through the wringer when their newborn had to spend 100 days in the NICU before being discharged in time for Mother’s Day that year.
“Every family’s journey is unique and requires a certain level of faith, and while ours was a challenging few months, what becomes abundantly clear, in retrospect, is how precious and perfect every moment is,” Chopra and Jonas shared on Instagram at the time.
“Our next chapter begins now, and our 𝚋𝚊𝚋𝚢 is truly a badass. Let’s get it MM! Mommy and Daddy love you.”
The couple revealed their daughter’s face for the first time at the Jonas Brothers’ Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in January. Since then, they’ve continued to proudly post sweet photos of their little one on social media.
