Serena Williams may have retired two years ago, but the tennis legend never ceases to stay in the limelight. After stepping away from the court, in a career gilded with 23 Grand Slams, she decided to push her business endeavors at full speed. It became evident when she invested $5 million in her friend and globally recognized artist Selena Gomez‘s mental health startup, Wondermind. Two years after it was founded, the media company is now thriving while achieving new heights. Not to mention that it’s got someone like Serena who never misses out on giving it a huge shoutout. Well, she has done it again, owing to Wondermind’s major achievement in the entertainment world.
Serena recently took to her Instagram to applaud Selena’s startup firm. For those unaware, Wondermind has teamed up with another popular media company, Fifth Seasons. The latter is known for popular titles like ‘Lady in the Lake’, ‘Severance’, ‘Tokyo Vice’, and ‘Wolf Like Me’. The collaboration is for a project called ‘Baggage Claim’, based on Juliana Baggot’s acclaimed, high-concept short story. It will mark the first scripted content Wondermind’s team will work on.
Given the company’s main goal of promoting mindfulness and mental health awareness, ‘Baggage Claim’ deals with a similar theme. After learning of this huge update, how could Serena Williams, a key investor herself, stay away from expressing her excitement? “Congrats to the Wondermind team!” she wrote in her Instagram story, dated November 27th, while boosting Selena’s confidence for her company’s maiden project.
Back in 2022, after her retirement, Serena made an investment of $5 million in Gomez’s Wondermind through her self-title venture fund, Serena Ventures. This major shot in the arm gave the startup a valuation of $100 million. After the collaboration, she made it evident that she was confident in Selena and Wondermind’s potential. “We’re obviously going to do more, and be a fund that does raise a billion dollars eventually,” said Williams, as reported by Bloomberg in 2022. “One thing I’m good at is building a career,” Serena said.
Selena and Serena’s friendship goes beyond business partnerships. Serena has previously praised and motivated Gomez on several occasions.
When Serena Williams applauded Selena Gomez for her new stint in fashion
While being a globally acclaimed musical artist, and a billionaire at 32, Selena Gomez has always shown a passion for exploring new realms of business. Back in 2023, she launched her own beauty line called Rare Beauty. While giving a sneak peek of her products, she shared some stunning pictures on her Instagram. In the caption of her post, she wrote, “Check out my new @RareBeauty fall collection: All of the Above Weightless Eyeshadow Stick, Perfect Strokes Longwear Gel Eyeliner, and Brow Harmony Precision Pencil. It’s creamy, longwearing, and perfect to take your look from day to night.”
Well, it didn’t take long for Serena Williams to come forward and give a shoutout to her friend. “Love,” she wrote in the comment section while extending her wishes to Gomez. Serena is a fan of Gomez’s music as well! Last year, Gomez teased her fans with a mysterious album as she shared some photos from a recording studio. Seeing this update, millions of her avid fans couldn’t hold their excitement. Williams was also one of them, as she expressed her curiosity. “TELL US MORE!!!!!!!!!” she wrote in the comments.
