Anthony Joshua Offers Love and Strength to Ex-Super Eagles Goalkeeper Battling for His Life!

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Fregene is currently in critical condition and has been placed on life support at the Obule Medical Centre in Sapele, Delta State, Nigeria. The news comes amidst growing concern for his health and urgent calls for medical and financial support.

The situation was brought to light by former Super Eagles striker Segun Odegbami, who issued a heartfelt statement detailing Fregene’s dire condition. He emphasized the urgent need for medical attention and highlighted the financial challenges surrounding his treatment. Odegbami expressed deep gratitude to the Nigerians who have already stepped forward to offer assistance, including the renowned Nigerian-born British boxing superstar, Anthony Joshua.

In his statement, Odegbami remarked, “The interest my story about Peter Fregene generated earlier today was truly overwhelming. Nigerians make me proud.” He acknowledged the outpouring of prayers and support from the public, which has been a source of comfort during this difficult time.

The statement reads in part: “the interest generated by my story on Peter Fregene earlier today has been overwhelming. Nigerians made me proud.

“I thank all those that responded in messages, particularly in prayers and in their desire to contribute to any funding.

“I am not involved in raising funds from the public on behalf of Fregene because I have no such authority. I would also not be involved in any thing that can be abused if not handled properly. As important as funds are for his treatment, they are secondary considering the stage of Peter’s condition in hospital.

“3 Nigerians that I know, read me and volunteered to support his treatment in hospital. I accepted their offer and channelled their wish to Tina, Peter’s faithful wife that has stood by him completely through all the decades of his medical ordeal.

“Meanwhile, tonight, Peter Fregene is in hospital and on life-support. His situation is critical. The Creator of Life has shown up. What Peter Fregene needs the most now are our collective prayers that the will of His Creator be done!

“I thank all Nigerians for their concern and response to the humble cry of their hero currently in distress.” The statement ended.

Support from the Community

While Odegbami clarified that he is not organizing public fundraising for Fregene—citing concerns about proper handling of funds—he confirmed that three individuals have volunteered to assist with medical expenses. He shared that these donations have been communicated to Fregene’s devoted wife, Tina, who has stood by him throughout his years of health struggles.

“While money is vital to his treatment, it is secondary when considering Peter’s condition in hospital,” Odegbami noted, emphasizing the importance of collective prayers for Fregene’s recovery.

Fregene’s Legacy

Peter Fregene, who served as the first-choice goalkeeper for the Nigerian national team from 1968 to 1971, is a celebrated figure in Nigerian football history. He was a key player during his tenure and represented Nigeria at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. His contributions to the national team and the sport have left an indelible mark.

Fregene was also recalled for the 1982 Africa Cup of Nations final, further solidifying his legacy as a dedicated athlete who played a significant role in Nigeria’s football journey.

A Nation’s Plea for Prayers

As Peter Fregene remains on life support, the call for prayers and support resonates throughout Nigeria and beyond. Anthony Joshua’s involvement, along with the encouragement from fellow athletes and the public, reflects a community rallying together in a time of need.

In his statement, Odegbami concluded with a powerful reminder of the collective strength found in prayer, urging everyone to come together to support Fregene in his time of distress. “What Peter Fregene needs most now is our collective prayer that the Creator’s will be done!”

The story of Peter Fregene serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by former athletes and the importance of community support in times of crisis. As the nation unites in hope for his recovery, the legacy of Fregene continues to inspire many, reinforcing the bonds of solidarity within the sports community.
