Harry and Meghan famously stepped down as senior working royals in 2020, with them departing the United Kingdom soon after. They then gave a televised interview to Oprah Winfrey a year later, where they spoke about having their security stripped away from them.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle previously opened up about losing their security detail in their 2020 interview with Oprah Winfrey
Speaking to Oprah Winfrey at the time, Meghan said she was told by palace officials that the couple’s newborn son, Archie, should not be given the title of prince, which also meant that he would not receive security. “This went on for the last few months of our pregnancy, where I’m going, hold on a second… he needs to be safe,” Meghan said.
She added: “We have created this monster machine (of clickbait and tabloids), you’ve allowed this to happen, which means we need to be safe.
“While I was pregnant, they wanted to change the convention, for Archie. Why? There’s no explanation.”
Then, Harry revealed how while the couple were in Canada following their departure from the Royal Family, he learned that their security would be cut, even though he “never thought” it would happen.
“While we were in Canada, in someone else’s house, I then got told, short notice, that security was going to be removed,” Harry recalled in the 2021 interview.
“So suddenly it dawned on me: ‘Hang on, the borders could be closed, we’re going to have our security removed, who knows how long lockdown is going to be, the world knows where we are, it’s not safe, it’s not secure, we probably need to get out of here,” he said.
The reason that Harry, and his family, lost their UK taxpayer-funded security detail is because they moved to the United States and quit royal duties in 2020.
The Duke of Sus𝓈ℯ𝓍 wants protection while visiting his homeland and claims he and his family are endangered because of the hostility towards him and his wife on social media.
In December 2023, Harry released a statement in regards to the High Court case, with him saying at the time: “It was with great sadness for both of us that my wife and I felt forced to step back from this role and leave the country in 2020. The UK is my home. The UK is central to the heritage of my children and a place I want them to feel at home, as much as where they live at the moment in the United States.”
The Duke went on to add how he feels it is “not possible to keep them safe when they are on UK soil”, going on to say: “I cannot put my wife in danger like that and, given my experiences in life, I am reluctant to unnecessarily put myself in harm’s way too.”
