War veteran who lost his leg in Iraq silences people who assume he must hate Muslims with brilliant Facebook post

while serving in the British Army has hit out at anti-Muslim sentiment and said he is frustrated that people expect him to be racist because of his experience.

Chris Herbert said someone had tried to recruit him for ‘anti Muslim propaganda’ and called on people to stop blaming all those of a particular faith for the actions of a minority.

His Facebook post, urging people to ‘get a grip of your lives, hug your family and get back to work’, has been shared more than 44,000 times.

Chris Herbert lost his leg in a bomb attack in Iraq in 2007 and says people now expect him to be racist

Mr Herbert has hit out at anti-Muslim sentiment, listing all the Muslims who have helped him since the injury

He said he may have been injured at the hands of a Muslim, but listed the number of Muslims who had since helped him in his recovery.

His words came as politicians and others told of their outrage at the comments of US presidential hopeful Donald Trump who called for Muslims to be barred from entering America, and then claimed parts of London are no-go areas for police because some areas are ‘so radicalised’.

Mr Herbert, from Portsmouth, wrote online: ‘Getting frustrated by some people expecting racism from me, because I got blown up. Here it is:

‘Yes. A Muslim man blew me up, and I lost my leg. A Muslim man also lost his arm that day wearing a British Uniform.A Muslim medic was in the helicopter that took me from the field.’

‘A Muslim surgeon performed the surgery that saved my life. A Muslim Nurse was part of the team that helped me when I returned to the UK.

‘A Muslim Healthcare Assistant was part of the team that sorted out my day to day needs in rehabilitation when I was learning to walk.’

The post continues: ‘A Muslim taxi driver gave me a free ride the first time I went for a beer with my Dad after I came home.

‘A Muslim doctor offered my Dad comfort and advice in a pub, when he didnt know how to deal with my medicines and side effects.’

Mr Herbert, a private in the Yorkshire Regiment, was in a Land Rover hit by a roadside bomb in 2007

Friends on Facebook, where Mr Herbert posted this joke photo taken at a party, have hailed his message

He also listed unpleasant experiences he had had with ‘white Brits’, but added: ‘Although, a lot of people helped in my recovery! I dont hate white brits either! hahaha’.

Mr Herbert’s post has drawn widespread praise, with people hailing him for sharing his experience.

Friend Ellen Cameron posted: ‘You couldn’t have said it better really’, Joe Clift wrote: ‘spot on’ and William Clarke added: ‘Wise words from a good lad!’.

Mr Herbert, a private in the 4th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment, was one of three soldiers injured when a bomb was detonated next to their Land Rover on 9 February 2007.

One of his comrades, 21-year-old Private Luke Simpson, died in the attack.

Fellow soldiers Captain Ibrar Ali had his right hand amputated and Private Paul Davey had shrapnel in both legs and underwent surgery.

Mr Herbert later said that, in the moments after the attack, he tried to stand and saw the tibia and fibia bones sticking out of his leg.

Mr Herbert has since taken part in a number of charity drives, including an eight-hour rowing marathon for the Army Benevolent Fund.
